Situated a short way back from
the harbour wall at Seaton is this beach defence battery (middle of photo)
which probably housed a 6 pounder anti-tank gun.
[Map ref. SY 2565 8976]
The large frontal embrasure has been bricked
in, as you can see above. The emplacement faces south-west (237 deg.) and is
constructed of reinforced concrete with brick shuttering.
Facing across the Axe and
sited to give enfilade fire along this beach, the battery's task would have
been to destroy or disable enemy armoured vehicles, as they disembarked from
landing craft, before they could move up the beach to the road beyond.
This Beach Light (Coastal
Artillery Searchlight) emplacement lies on the sea-front at Seaton.
It's task was to illuminate surface targets for the Coastal Artillery
Battery which was situated north of this structure.
