somerset pillboxes

In the middle of the car park on Dunster beach (overlooking Blue Anchor Bay) lies this Type 24 beach defence pillbox which, in common with many other pillboxes on the west Somerset coast, is covered in large pebbles which provided an effective camouflage on the mostly pebble strewn beaches.  This structure, however, is now surrounded by sand.

The rear of the box - all loopholes and the entrance have been blocked.  The low structure in the foreground may have been built to deflect enemy fire away from the entrance.  The box faces north.
