DOVER

| This Type 23 pillbox lies just
to the east of the WWII 6 inch gun emplacements of St. Martin's Battery, on
the Western Heights, Dover. The structure, which faces east, had board
shuttering. |

|
In the rear open part of the
structure, this steel post, upon which a Light Machine Gun would have been
mounted for use against low flying enemy aircraft, survives in good
condition. |

|
The rear of the structure.
The top of the LMG mounting post can just be seen above the rear wall. |

| The port of Dover
in 2005 with the peaceful waters of the English Channel beyond. A far different scene
from that of
Dover in the dark days of 1940 when German bombers were attacking our
merchant ships out in the channel. |
