To the east of the railway
bridge at Cloakham are approx. twenty of these rare anti-tank 'Hairpin'
sockets. The 'Hairpins' were lengths of bent rail which would
have been slotted into the sockets if the local military situation demanded,
to stop or delay enemy tanks. The sockets, when not in use, were
covered with metal socket covers. The amount of road re-surfacing
since WWII has ensured that very few of these sockets remain unburied.
